Selecting a Greenhouse Layout
If you're planning to build a greenhouse on your residential property, you will need to choose a greenhouse layout. Before you do, however, you will need to decide on the right location. Your location should provide for a substantial amount of sunlight. Morning and evening sun is best for most types of plants. You will want to consider the type of plants you are growing before you do decide on the location of your greenhouse. For example, tropical plants may require more sunlight than some other types of plants. Once you've determined your ideal location, you can start planning your layout.
First, you'll need to decide whether your structure will be lean-to, detached or ridge and furrow. A lean-to design means your greenhouse is attached to another building. This makes it easy to have access to electricity, water and storage space. A detached greenhouse is good if you don't need an elaborate setup and want a simple, old-fashioned structure. A ridge and furrow style means the greenhouse is attached at the eave by a gutter which provides for more space and efficiency. Often this style greenhouse will have a gabled or domed roof depending on what kind of material it is made out of. Glass and fiberglass are often gabled while plastics are often domed.
You will need to choose a shape for your greenhouse. The basic rectangular pitched roof greenhouse offers plenty of space and isn't overly expensive to construct. Domed greenhouses are a good style for holding up under rain and snow. While the A-frame style greenhouse looks quite stylish and is a sturdy design, you will be sacrificing valuable interior space for this style. You can even go for a gothic style greenhouse. Like the A-frame, the gothic style wastes interior space but provides a designer look to any garden area.
Before making a final decision regarding your preferred greenhouse layout, take a look at photographs or drawings of each style. You might also want to learn as much as you can about the plants you'll be growing in your greenhouse before choosing a layout. Some plants need more space than others. You'll definitely want to sketch out some plans and figure out what you'll be placing where before you start building anything. There are plenty of books in the gardening section of your local library or bookstore that can help you design the ideal greenhouse for your needs.
