Should You Build a Greenhouse Prototype?
Some people planning to build a greenhouse on their property construct a greenhouse prototype first. A prototype is a small model which lets you test materials and design on a smaller scale before building the real thing. It can save you a lot of hassle and money in the long run because you took the time to test out your materials and design before building your full-size greenhouse. The last thing you want is to spend a fortune on a full-sized structure then realize it's not what you want.
One way to build a prototype is to scale down full-size greenhouse plans. Or, you can use plans for a mini greenhouse that features the same design and construction materials that you are considering for your full-size greenhouse. A mini greenhouse is a great way to introduce yourself to this type of gardening and get some experience before trying it on a larger scale. When planning and building a full-size greenhouse, there are so many things to consider. Building any structure is something that requires a great deal of decision making and planning.
First, you'll need to decide whether you want your greenhouse to be made from glass, polycarbonate or plastic. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages. Glass is traditional, beautiful and sturdy. Polycarbonate is even more durable and break resistant. Plastic is a good material for trapping heat and is affordable for the budget gardener. There are also different styles of greenhouse which include detached and lean-to. Detached means the structure stands alone, while lean-to means it is attached to a larger structure. Many home gardeners like the lean-to because it provides easy access to electricity, heat and water. Detached greenhouses can actually be connected to one another using tunnels. This makes it easy to expand your greenhouse area.
Another area where a greenhouse prototype can be helpful is the shape of your structure. The rectangular greenhouse with slanted roof is a traditional choice that provides for plenty of work space. Another popular design is the rounded roof, which is space efficient and good for rain and snow. Gabled designs are popular, and even A-line and gothic style greenhouse roof designs can be found in many gardens. It's all a matter of what you find the most appealing and what works best for you.
