Can You Grow Tomatoes Year Round in a Greenhouse?
It is definitely possible to grow tomatoes year round in a greenhouse. However, to be successful you will need to use the right supplies and techniques. You can purchase tomato seeds which are especially for greenhouse growing from garden centers and seed catalogs. When starting the seeds, you should allow them to sit under heat mats for the first few weeks which will encourage good development. There will come a time when you'll need to move each tomato plant into a ten-gallon container. On the subject of potting, the right kind of soil is crucial to your success. Fresh soil is a definite must. Also, you'll want to add calcium to the soil using bone meal because hothouse tomatoes are prone to deficiency.
Because tomatoes often fall prey to insects, you will need to find a safe way to repel them. Planting fragrant herbs like lavender, mint, sage and basil will work to repel damage from pests. You may also want to spray your plants with an organic repellent if you find pests are a problem for your greenhouse. Light and heat are two more important factors to deal with when it comes to successfully growing hothouse tomatoes. Your tomatoes will need substantial sunlight, which may be difficult in the fall and winter. During the colder months, it might be necessary to use artificial lighting.
The temperature in your greenhouse should be no less than 60 degrees but no more than 90 degrees. This means you might have to put in an artificial heat source in the winter. As you can see, growing tomatoes in the winter requires a bit more equipment and attention, but it is definitely possible. Many hobbyist growers end up turning their passion for growing hothouse tomatoes into a business and sell their tomatoes to farmer's markets and grocery stores all year round. There are certainly plenty of tomato species to play with, from sweet cherry tomatoes to exotic heirloom tomatoes.
As you can see, it is definitely possible to grow tomatoes year round in a greenhouse. It is not only possible, but easier than you might think. You just need to prepare for the needs of the tomatoes you are growing. All tomato plants will need plenty of light, warmth, moisture and growing room in order to thrive. By taking proper measures with the soil and growing conditions, you can enjoy delicious tomatoes any time of the year!
